MOTIONLINE® Profinet and Industrial Ethernet cables

Industrial Ethernet has now overtaken traditional fieldbuses in industrial applications with a market share of newly installed nodes (a machine or device connected to an industrial network) set to grow from 46% in 2017 to 52% in 2018. This trend is continuing to grow as operators adopt Industry 4.0, especially for smart factories that require the connection of large volumes of equipment and sensors for process control and predictive maintenance. Nexans has responded by developing its comprehensive MOTIONLINE® range of Industrial Ethernet and Profinet cables to suit static and dynamic automation applications.

Nexans MOTIONLINE® Industrial Ethernet cables are designed to survive harsh environments. They have specialist industrial-grade jackets to withstand exposure to oil, chemicals and rough handling and to protect communication signals with 100% Electro Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) shielding. This construction means that they are suitable for both static and dynamic applications where their polyurethane (PUR) jackets provide high flexibility to withstand the rigors of industrial automation environments.

Nexans Industrial Ethernet cables differ from standard Fieldbus cables as they offer higher data rates. Data transmission can reach 10/100 Mbps, 1 Gbps, 10 Gbps in the different categories of Cat5e, Cat6, Cat7 with two and four pairs. Different levels of dynamic performance are available, with highly flexible, flexible and static varieties. They comply with UL/ non-UL and RoHS legislation and halogen free and low smoke zero halogen (LSZH) versions are available. Nexans Profinet and Industrial Ethernet cables are also available with UL Listed CMX and CMG certifications, in addition to UL AWM versions. The CMX and CMG certifications guarantee that the cable can also be installed outside the machine and in cable trays. These versions are suitable for direct burial and, thanks to their high flame retardant properties, for connecting individual machines.

Profinet is a strategic, global, open-standard Ethernet technology that is already used widely in Europe and is growing in popularity in America. Developed by Siemens and Profibus and Profinet International (PI), it combines the benefits of Profibus with the flexibility of Ethernet network standards.

Nexans Profinet cables are designed specifically for Siemens devices, with different levels of dynamic performance, and differing environmental ratings, with some being suitable for potentially hazardous areas under the National Electric Code (NEC) Class 1 Division. The Profient cables can maximize uptime while reducing product failures in all industrial environments and their increased copper content results in improved data transmission over larger distances. In addition, their PLTC approval also means that the cables can be used in existing stuctures where the previously installed cable trays have power-limited designated paths, so there is no need to install a separate communications cable tray.

The MOTIONLINE® Industrial Ethernet and Profinet cables are produced by Nexans Germany in Nuremberg, Nexans Intercablo in the Pioltello plant and by Nexans France in the Fumay unit.

“ We are extremely proud of our MOTIONLINE® Industrial Ethernet cables. With the rise of Industry 4.0 they will be more important than ever for ensuring the smooth running of smart factories by transmitting vital production and process health data. ”
